A Driver’s Perspective

‘Twas still weeks before Christmas and all through the bus
The students were stirring, creating a fuss.
The bus had been prepped, and pre-tripped with care
Heaters unplugged, tires checked for air.

All Drivers, now ready in a pre-heated bus.
(Many thanks, Cover-Drivers, for thinking of us.)
Then a short honk and brake check, we’re out of each spot
And with great expectation, sail out of the lot!

Off to the first of multiple pick-ups
As we plan to get through without any hic-cups.
But it soon becomes clear this won’t be the case
As the radio buzzes with Routes calling Base.

For the roads, it is clear, are covered with snow.
Hiding ice underneath, we have to go slow.
Be cautious drive safely, try not to be late.
And we sit through another 3-minute wait.

Traffic is slow and there sure is a lot.
With back-ups at lights, we can’t help but get caught
As through one more light-cycle we sit and we wait.
And time just keeps ticking, for we’re already late.

To make up some time just what can we do,
Barring a cancellation or two?
We would need dry roads and traffic that’s light.
Not likely to happen when everything’s white.

So we need to just chill – sit back and enjoy,
The daily routine and each girl and boy.
To transport them safely between home and school,
Cargo that someone does see as their Jewel.

For even on days that seem out-of-control.
We do well to remember each Child has a soul
Created by God, the Father of all,
And each has a purpose, no matter how small.

While there are times they cause us distress
Yet each precious one is in divine process
Learning and growing; yes, even as we,
To become all that each was created to be.

And now, as their Drivers, we have a small chance
A time, for a season, perhaps just a glance
To make a small difference, for better or worse
And change each little life with blessing or curse.

To believe God would have us here for a reason
No matter how long or short is our season.
For we are still growing, just as each child;
When the weather is harsh, and when it is mild.

And though there are days when everything’s late
There also are those when it all works out great!
So during this season of joy and good cheer
May each one’s perspective outshine any fear.
